In June 1775, John Morrell enlisted as a private in the Continental Army under Capt. Gibson of the 4th New York Regiment under the command of Col. Thomas Marshall. He participated in the battle of Stoney Point where he received a wound over the left eye. He later participated in the battle at Yorktown where he was captured by Lord Cornwallis. He was kept a prisoner there until Cornwallis surrendered to the combined American and French armies. He was discharged in October 1781. After the war he lived in North Carolina for four years, then in Tennessee for nineteen years, and then in Illinois.
