Conflict resolved by weighing the records: the tree’s death 4 Oct 1862 rests on the Morrill genealogy (p. 104, no extract). Her gravestone at Fayette Corner Cemetery, read from the photograph, says ‘MARY G. WIFE OF Capt. John Fifield DIED Oct. 4, 1861, AEt. 63 ys. 5 ms. 9 ds.’, and 63 years 5 months 9 days after her recorded birth on 25 Apr 1798 is exactly 4 Oct 1861 (calculated), so the stone agrees with the tree’s birth date and day and month of death and differs only in the year. The 1860 census of Fayette lists her alive (62) in John’s household, consistent with either year, and John married Joanna Hill at Fayette on 16 Oct 1862, which is hard to reconcile with a death twelve days earlier. The stone is the nearer and original record and 1861 is taken; the 1862 trail is kept here. Identity distinguished from Mary Morrill (b. 3 Nov 1799, New Hampshire, daughter of John Morrill and Hannah Barnard, no spouse in the tree), because the stone’s age reckons to this person’s birth date and names her husband John Fifield, while that Mary has a different birth date and no husband. needs independent verification: the stone is cited through the Find a Grave memorial; the place Fayette comes from the memorial page and her burial there.[8]
