needs independent verification: Roxanna (Roxie) J. James’s mother’s given name is disputed between two independent sources. Her own 1876 Vermont marriage record (Vermont, Town Clerk, Vital and Town Records, 1732-2005, Peru, Bennington, Vermont) names her mother as ‘Nancy James’ — presumably given by the bride, at the time of her own wedding. Her 1908 New Hampshire death record (New Hampshire, Death Records, 1654-1947, Canterbury, Merrimack, New Hampshire) instead names her mother as ‘Eliza’ — reported by an unidentified informant after Roxanna’s own death, three decades later. Both sources independently agree on the father’s name, Jonathan James. Weighing informant proximity (the bride as the likely informant at the closer-in-time event, versus a secondhand death-record informant), the marriage record’s ‘Nancy James’ is adopted here as the better-supported value; ‘Eliza’ is preserved as the excluded value pending a source that could establish whether Jonathan James had two wives (a first wife Eliza predeceasing Nancy) or whether one record simply erred.[7]
