A painter and decorator, he died at Mason City, Iowa, and was buried at Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, where his brother Hiram lived; the 1860 census shows Francis B. and Hiram Batchelder in one Prairie du Chien dwelling with Francis’s wife Emily and four children. The Iowa death record names no parents: his identity as the son of Stephen and Hannah rests on the exact birth date, 12 April 1824, shared by the Warner birth entry and the Find a Grave Index entry, together with the burial town and the family cluster. The wife of Francis B. Batchelder is called Emily Farnum only on a Find a Grave memorial whose contributor cites nothing; the 1860 census names her Emily Batchelder, born in Michigan about 1833, and gives no maiden name. A Ramsey County marriage index reads the marriage as 12 September 1850 and the bride’s surname as Famam, against the memorial’s 11 September and Farnum. Needs independent verification: the Ramsey County marriage register entry for Francis B. Batchelder, December 1849 to May 1853, would settle the date and the bride’s surname.[14]

Francis Brown Batchelder, called Frank, lived at Prairie du Chien in Crawford County in 1860 with a wife Emily and a daughter Carry aged 4.
