A second index entry for Hiram’s death reads birth 12 July 1830 in Vermont; the 1850 census (age 19, born New Hampshire) and the 1860 census (age 29, born New Hampshire) support 1831 and New Hampshire. Needs independent verification: his parents are named only in the Wisconsin death record, whose informant is not shown; a marriage record, obituary or the estate of Stephen Batchelder would confirm the relationship.[11]
The birth year is disputed. The Wisconsin death record the tree already cites gives 12 July 1831, and its stated age of 73 years, 6 months and 17 days reaches 29 January 1905 exactly from that date; the 1850, 1860 and 1870 censuses give ages that fit 1831. The 1900 census (July 1830) and the Find a Grave index and memorial (12 July 1830, the memorial also naming him Hiram Frank) give 1830. The tree keeps 12 July 1831, the date on the record made at his death, and records 1830 as the alternative. Needs independent verification: an obituary or the Wisconsin death certificate would settle the year.[14]
Census indexes give his name as Frank Batchelder in 1880 and Hiram T. Batchelder in 1900, and the Find a Grave memorial names him Hiram Frank. The 1880 household is identified with him by its wife Louisa, 42, born Illinois, and by the daughters Hattie and Flora, who are in his 1870 household. His brother Francis B. (Frank) Batchelder, who was 56 in 1880 and whose wife Emily was born in Michigan according to the 1860 census, does not fit that household. The 1890 Union veterans schedule is indexed at Thayer, Kansas, but its original place reads Prairie du Chien, which agrees with his residence in 1870, 1880 and 1900, so Prairie du Chien is recorded and the Kansas reading is set aside. Needs independent verification: the 1880 and 1890 entries are index rows only and the 1890 schedule image was not examined.[17]

Louise Adele Spragins is identified as the wife of Hiram F. Batchelder by her April 1838 birth and Illinois birthplace, which agree with the 1900 census entry for his wife Louise, 62, born Illinois, married 37 years, and by the 1895 marriage record of their daughter Hattie, which names her parents as Hiram Batchelder and Louisa Spragins. Her surname is spelled Spragins in that record and in the Find a Grave index, Spragine in the 1894 marriage record of their daughter Florence (where the mother is indexed as Denise), and Spraggins in the 1929 Minnesota death record of that daughter; Spragins is used here. Needs independent verification: no record of her own birth, marriage or death has been seen, her dates rest on a memorial index entry, and the marriage date is computed from the census statement of 37 years.[24]

Fred Batchelder appears only as a 5-year-old, born in Wisconsin, in the 1870 Prairie du Chien household of Hiram and Louisa Batchelder; he is not in the 1880 household and no later record has been found. The tree records no earlier wife for Hiram, who was living in his brother Francis’s household in 1860, and the 1900 census puts the marriage at about 1863, so the child is placed with Louisa. Needs independent verification: his birth, parentage and fate rest on the single census household; a birth, school or burial record would confirm them.[30]

Hattie Batchelder is the 3-year-old in the 1870 household and the 12-year-old daughter in the 1880 household, both born in Wisconsin, and her 1895 marriage record names Hiram Batchelder and Louisa Spragins as her parents. The Find a Grave memorial names her Harriet Bertha Batchelder Kieser (1868-1945); that page is user-contributed and is a lead only. She is distinguished from Hattie E., born 1868 in Illinois, who married the evangelist Herbert Slee Morrill in 1907: both censuses give Wisconsin as Hattie Batchelder’s birthplace, and the memorial gives her the married surname Kieser. Needs independent verification: her birth year is computed from census ages and her death has not been documented by a record.[34]

No other Flora or Florence in the tree fits: Florence B., wife of Roy Herbert Morrill (born 1888), and Cora, born 1866 in Wisconsin, mother of the children of Frank L.
