John R. Bates and Nancy Jane Morrill
John R. Bates
Identity, parents and household. The 1875 New Hampshire marriage record names the groom John R. Bates, aged 49, son of Joseph Bates and Lucy, wife Nancy J. Morrill, with W. K. Morrill and Nancy Kimball as the bride’s parents. The Vermont death record for John R. Bates, who died in 1892 aged 68 years 1 month 15 days and was born at Brookfield, names his parents as Joseph Bates and Lucy Robinson. In the 1880 census at Proctor Mills John R. Bates, 54, a blacksmith born in Vermont, heads a household with his wife Nancy J., a daughter Eras M. (3), a son John K. (13) and a daughter Abbey E. (15). He is buried at Pine Grove Cemetery, Warner. Needs independent verification: records naming Joseph Bates and Lucy Robinson that give dates or places for either parent, and the Vermont death register entry for the place and cause of death. John K. and Abbey E., born before the 1875 marriage, are probably children of an earlier marriage that no record located so far documents.[5]
