Edward’s birth date, 25 March 1926, is given on his Massachusetts death index entry, which is an index and not the certificate, and by an index entry of his Social Security application of June 1942, which gives his name as Edward Joseph Cavanagh, his birthplace as Boston, his residence as North Weymouth and his parents as Edward J Cavanagh and Anna Hand. The 1940 and 1950 censuses list him with the same parents at Boston, the 1950 entry spelling the surname Cavanaugh; the 1940 household is indexed under the enumeration district of a convent, which looks like an indexing error. His middle initial J comes from the Find a Grave memorial of his wife, and the death index lists his spouse as Sylvis S S Smith, which is read as Sylvia Smith on the strength of that memorial.
