Everett Herrerias and Camilla L. Morrill
Everett Herrerias
Two sources disagree on the mother of Everett J. Herrerias’s children Consuelo, Richard, and Everett Joseph Herrerias Jr. A December 1939 Social Security Numerical Identification File (NUMIDENT) application for Everett Joseph Herrerias Jr (b. 18 Dec 1925, Berkeley, California) names his parents as Evertt J Herrerias (father) and Camilla Moorill (mother, a spelling drift of Morrill) — see this family’s own record (Everett Herrerias x Camilla L. Morrill). A 11 September 1948 San Francisco Chronicle obituary notice (indexed by GenealogyBank), for ‘Sir Auir Herrerias and Ada’ (both reported dying about the same date, suggesting a joint-fatality event), instead names ‘Ada’ as mother of three children by Everett J Herrerias: Consuelo, Richard, and Everett J Herrerias Jr. Weighing the two: the NUMIDENT application is a federal administrative record, its parentage fields most plausibly supplied circa the child’s minority (December 1939, when the subject was 14) by a parent or guardian with direct knowledge, and it is independent of the 1948 newspaper report. The 1948 record is a derivative newspaper-obituary index (not a viewed original image), its own informant undetermined, its subject is ‘Ada’ and her father, not Everett J Herrerias Jr, and its report of Ada as mother appears only incidentally in an extended-family listing — consistent with a secondhand, grief-context report that could mistake a stepmother, sister-in-law, or unrelated in-law for ‘mother’, or could reflect a second/informal union not otherwise documented for Everett J Herrerias. No independent record (marriage, divorce, or death for Camilla L. Morrill or for ‘Ada’ under a maiden name) has been located to corroborate a change of spouse between 1939 and 1948. Resolution: Camilla L. Morrill is retained as the documented mother of Everett Joseph Herrerias Jr, on the NUMIDENT record’s authority (this family’s own son); ‘Ada’ is not identified as Camilla L. Morrill and is not added to this tree as a distinct person on this evidence. Consuelo and Richard Herrerias, named as additional children of Everett J Herrerias and ‘Ada’ on the 1948 record, are not added to this tree pending an independent record establishing their parentage — this is an open lead, not a closed gap.[1]
