Samuel Morrell of Newark, New Jersey, made his will on 28 June 1772, and it was proved at New York on 4 August 1783, which is the basis of the death date given here, estimated from the probate. The will leaves his estate to his wife while she remains a widow, a legacy to his daughter Margaret at her marriage and one to his son Stephen Hadden, and names as executors Stephen Dwight and his brother Jonathan Morrell; it does not name his wife. A published Morrell genealogy dates his birth to 1733 and gives his father Thomas Morrell’s children as Jonathan, Jacob, Samuel, Robert and Thomas, in agreement with Jonathan as his brother, whereas the birth recorded here is 3 March 1734. Needs independent verification: the identity of his wife, which neither the will nor the genealogy gives, and the date and place of his death, which the probate does not fix.[5]

Susannah Elsworth — m. in N.Y., N.Y., 1800
A guardianship of 28 June 1802 in Essex County, New Jersey, appoints Captain Stephen H. Morrell guardian of his two infant sons, Hedden and John, with James Hedden of Newark as fellow bondsman. The record does not say that this Stephen H. Morrell is the son of Samuel Morrell of Newark; the identification rests on the name, Hedden as the middle name of the one and the given name of a son, and Newark. If he is the same man, whether the sons’ mother was Susannah Elsworth, whom he married in New York in 1800, or an earlier wife is not established. Needs independent verification: his identity with the Stephen Hadden Morrell recorded here, which a baptism, deed or will naming his father would show.[8]
