Identity and unresolved points. Charles Willard Morrill of Holt, Montana is the Charles Morrill of Sebec, Maine: the 1860 Sebec census enumerates Charles W, 14, in the household of Joseph and Hannah Morrill with Elbridge C, Alwilda A, Elnathan D and Jere T, the children of that family, and the Find a Grave memorial names parents Joseph Morrill and Hannah (Cutter) Tabor and the same sibship. Charles W of Monson (Charles Wesley, son of Levi) and Charles G. Morrill (b. 1844 Vermont, son of Joseph Ames Morrill) are different men. Not altered here: his birth is 1844 in the tree but about 1846 in the 1860 census and 24 Feb 1846 on the memorial (enlistment at 18 in 1862 fits 1844); an 1897 pension index names a different regiment (8th) from the tree’s 9th Maine, and a 1900 census index gives an Ohio birth; the tree-only marriage date 18 Oct 1873 (Salt Lake City) was not found in any record read. The memorial also lists Madora M. (Sands, 1876-1960) and Charles Joseph (1883-1940) as children; the 1880 census line for a child of his household is indexed ‘Malorea Auclitt’, with a different surname, so neither is added here.[3]
NOTE: needs independent verification: the marriage to Martha E. Wightman and the three daughters rest on derivative index entries at QUAY 1 (1880 census, Montana and Utah records naming Charles W. or Charles Willard and Martha or Mattie E. as husband and wife) and a user-contributed memorial; the marriage record itself (reported as 18 Oct 1873, Salt Lake City, not seen) and the 1900 Montana census would confirm it.
Charles Morrill enlisted as a Private on 25 August 1862 at the age of 18 in Company E, 9th Infantry Regiment Maine. He was promoted to Full Corporal. He was discharged on 30 June 1865.
