Charles Walter Morrill is the son of Charles W Morrill, born in Vermont, and Jennie Sturgis, born in England: the 1900 census lists him in their household in Bibb County, Georgia, the 1910 census gives his father’s birthplace as Vermont and his mother’s as England, and his death certificate of 1921, informed by his widow, names his parents as C W Morrill of Vermont and Jennie Sturgis of England. The 1920 census index gives both parents’ birthplaces as Georgia, against these. Identity distinguished from his father, Charles Wesley Morrill (b. 1841, Vermont), the head of the 1900 household, by the death certificate, which names C W Morrill as the father of the man who died in 1921. Charles Wesley Morrill’s first wife, Mary Jane Brown, is recorded in the tree as dying in 1874, eleven years before this birth, so she cannot be his mother. His birth is given as 17 February 1884 by the death certificate, which counts his age as 36 years 10 months 18 days, and as 17 February 1885 by the Find a Grave Index; the 1900 census gives February 1885, and the 1910 and 1920 census indexes give ages that point to about 1889 and 1884. The tree keeps about 1885 and takes his birthplace, Macon, from the death certificate; the choice between 1884 and 1885 is unresolved. He died of diabetes on 4 January 1921 in Norfolk County, Virginia, and was buried at Riverside, Norfolk, the next day. He married Lena Gertrude Burch, called Gertrude on his death certificate and in the 1920 census, and had two sons, Fred Walter and Harry Raymond; his widow married Mark W Stump at Norfolk on 5 December 1921. His marriage to her is not found in any index. Needs independent verification: a birth record for 1884 or 1885, and a marriage record for him and Lena.[11]
Lena Gertrude Burch
- Born
- NOV 1890[17] at Ga.
- Father
- Berry Burch
- Mother
- Mary Jane Jessup
- Also m.
- (2) Mark W Stump
The wife is called Lena G in the 1910 census index, in the NUMIDENT record of her son Harry and in the Norfolk marriage index of 1921, and Gertrude in the 1920 census, on the 1921 death certificate of Charles Walter Morrill, for which she was the informant, and in the 1930 census, where she appears as Gertrude D Stump. Her given name is taken as Lena Gertrude, on the inference that the two names belong to one woman, since each record gives her as the mother of the same two sons. Her maiden surname Burch comes from the NUMIDENT record and from the 1921 marriage index, which names her parents J Burch and B Burch and her age as 30, about 1891; the 1920 and 1930 censuses give about 1891 or 1892. Her marriage to Charles Walter Morrill is not found in any index. Needs independent verification: a marriage record for her and Charles Walter Morrill, a record of her own birth, and the meaning of the initial D.[18]
In the 1900 census Lena G Burch, aged 10 and born in November 1890 in Georgia, was living in Dodge County, Georgia, with her divorced mother and with David and Ida Darden and Flora Burch, recorded as her brother and sisters.[23]
